Tyrrell Hatton had a solid performance at this year’s Augusta National, posting a 3-under 69 in the final round to finish tied for 9th place.
But that didn’t deter him from playing the 550-yard par-5 15th hole.
“I was trying not to think about 15 until I got there. That hole lives in my head rent-free. I hate it. I absolutely hate it,” Hutton said Sunday. told.
“I think it hates me because of the score I ended up with. I played that hole 4 over again this week.”
The Englishman managed to make par on Sunday, but he couldn’t do anything until then.
Continuing from the first round early Friday morning, Hatton hit his third shot into the water in front of the green. Hatton was at 3 under at this point, but a mistake resulted in a double bogey and he fell back to 1 under.
In the second round later that day, Hatton made a bogey with a three-putt from about 15 feet. When he left the green, he was sitting at 2 over par.
Then on Saturday, Hutton hit his second shot onto the green. His ball bounced over the green and into the water on the 16th hole. The bogeys continued after that.
Hatton also struggled on the 18th hole, hitting two bogeys and one double bogey throughout the week.
“Yeah, 15 and 18 and 8 over in the tournament. When I take them out, you can see I’ve been playing really good golf. There’s nothing I can do about it right now,” Hatton said. .
“I don’t think there’s any other golf course in the world where I’ve played 25 times and only hit 60 seconds twice. It’s a really difficult golf course and I’ve always really struggled.”
Hatton’s final round 69 marked the second time in his career he has broken 70 at Augusta National. But if it weren’t for the 15th and 18th holes, he could have shot in the 60s in all four rounds and competed against the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, Ludwig Oberg and Max Homa. .
Perhaps next year Hatton will play those two holes better and turn his Masters fortunes around.
