Lara Trump blasts hush money case as ‘insane,’ says it won’t hurt Trump campaign

Lara Trump, co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), called the hush money lawsuit against her father-in-law “insane” as jury selection for the trial begins Monday.

Former President Trump is back in a New York courtroom for the first day of his hush money trial, facing 34 charges of falsifying business records. Lara Trump on Monday criticized Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) for filing a lawsuit during the 2024 campaign.

“It’s ridiculous that they’re dragging this man into a New York City courtroom. It’s clear how partisan this is, and Alvin Bragg himself said that Donald Trump has announced his candidacy for president. I didn’t want to bring this up until then,” she said on NewsNation’s “Morning in America.”

“It’s insane that we’re in this part of the United States,” she added.

She said that while the incident was “ridiculous,” she did not expect it to have a negative impact on the former president’s White House campaign. She noted that people “don’t care about these lawsuits” filed against him.

“This has nothing to do with crime or the right thing happening. It’s about politics,” she said. “People see it, they understand it, and that’s why our fundraising tends to increase every time a situation like this happens. I don’t think this will change. People will continue to I think I will continue to support this president.”

The trial will run for at least six weeks, meaning Mr. Trump will have to spend much of his time in New York courtrooms rather than on the campaign trail. He is expected to attend campaign events on his days off.

President Trump will reimburse then-fixer Michael Cohen for paying adult film actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet about an alleged affair with the former president before the 2016 election. In connection with this, he is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records.

President Trump has denied any wrongdoing in the hush-money scandal, calling the effort politically motivated during the campaign. Hours before appearing in a New York courtroom on Monday, he also criticized the judge overseeing the trial and once again called the entire incident a “witch hunt.”
