Chevron Championship: ‘Our Caitlin Clark;’ Nelly Korda draws perfect comp from Lilia Vu

Women’s sports are at a prime moment right now.

The women’s March Madness tournament set records and Iowa State’s Caitlin Clark took the sports world by storm. Augusta National’s ratings plummeted, so much so that twice as many people watched the Iowa vs. University Final Four game as the Masters.

But college basketball isn’t the only sport seeing a rise in women’s sports.

The LPGA continues to grow and expand. Earlier this week, the LPGA announced the record prize money for this week’s Chevron Championship, the first major of the year.

It’s a relief that Nelly Korda has a heater on.

Korda has won four straight LPGA Tour events in 2024 and is looking for his fifth victory this week. What she has accomplished so far this year is amazing. This feat hasn’t been accomplished since Lorena Ochoa won four straight in 2008. The only person to have achieved this feat was Annika Sorenstam in 2004 and 2005.

Ahead of the Chevron Championship, world No. 2 Lilia Vu made a perfect comparison between Korda and Clark.

“She’s like our Caitlin Clark here,” Vu said.

Thanks to Clark and the rest of the draft class, viewership for women’s college basketball has skyrocketed.

But Clark is the biggest draw. She is Division I’s all-time leading scorer in overall men’s and women’s basketball.Won the women’s national championship for the first time in college basketball history more eyes than men.

“I think that’s what’s happening at Nelly right now,” Vu explained of the expansion of women’s golf. “She brings a lot to the table, winning one win after another and keeping it all together. She’s done a very good job. She’s very well-liked and loved here. She has a lot of fans. She’s a great person.”

To open the season, Korda won the LPGA Drive On Championship. After seven weeks off, the Florida resident won the Far Hills Seripak Championship title in the playoffs. She then became Ford her first championship winner and T-Mobile matched her play and stacked her event to outscore her field and earn her fourth victory.

Rose Chan, another popular player in the women’s golf world, reflected on what Korda is doing ahead of Chevron.

“There’s only one Nelly Korda, and I think she’s showing that she’s the best in this game right now,” Chan said. “I’ve always watched her play. There was something special about her. So watching everything she’s done, especially her last four tournaments, It was very exciting.”

Her fellow competitors consider Korda to be arguably the best athlete in the world, regardless of gender.

Will she be able to win her second major and fifth straight LPGA tournament, or will someone else take the top spot from her?
