New York Gov. Kathy Hochul Celebrates Budget Gains with $2.4 Billion for Migrants

On Monday, New York State’s Democratic governor, Kathy Hochul, celebrated a victory that got her nearly everything she wanted in a $237 billion budget fight, including $2.4 billion in additional spending for immigrants.

As usual, Hochul boasted that he had defeated politics, saying: It never worked for me and never will. “We had some very tough conversations about how we can change the entrenched status quo,” Politico reported.

In fact, the budget proposal includes $4 billion more than she requested in January.

The Associated Press noted that the budget includes: $2.4 billion This is in consideration of Joe Biden’s continued influx of illegal immigrants.

While Mr. Hochul is elated with the budget victory, New York City Mayor Eric Adams remains frustrated because he did not receive his proposed $6 billion in immigration spending.

Spending on migrants would go towards short-term shelter, health care and even permanent housing.

The plan also includes spending to help immigrants with work permits and legal costs for asylum claims.

Hochul’s announcement came on the heels of large protests by undocumented immigrants, mostly from Africa, demanding more benefits.

About 1,500 immigrants gathered for a protest after it became clear that many immigrants would not be allowed into City Hall Park for hearings, according to the Associated Press.

City staff Note African migrants are usually young men and often arrive without families, so they are not eligible for asylum.

Mayor Adams and his administration are considering housing immigrants at several soccer fields on Randalls Island, a plan that would cut off access to recreational activities for thousands of city children. Ed Cox, chairman of the New York State Republican Party, called the Democratic housing crisis a disaster and slammed Mr. Hochul over his budget victory.

“Governor Hochul and the Legislative Democratic Party continue to ignore housing realities. Their policies will continue to mean fewer housing options, less investment in new housing, and continued deterioration of existing housing stock. “I will,” Cox said in a statement after being sworn in as governor. He announced a budget deal.

“Socialist programs such as so-called ‘just cause evictions’ will only make the situation worse. They now want to export housing policies that have failed for decades in New York City to other parts of the state. Such policies are doomed to failure.”
