Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser traveled to the apparently extravagant Masters Golf Tournament on taxpayers’ dime, writing off the cost as a business opportunity to “promote sports and economic development” in the nation’s capital.
The Masters, a major golf event in Augusta, Georgia, is more than 800 miles from Washington, D.C.

In a Monday afternoon phone call, Susana Castillo, Bowser’s director of communications, told local news outlets that the two leading a new city task force “aimed at revitalizing the Gallery Place and Chinatown areas” are directing Bowser to the tournament. He admitted that he had invited him.

Castillo said that in any situation, including golf tournaments, mayors should “advance administrative interests, whether it be here in the city, in another city, or in another country.” ” he said he intended to do so.
