The U.S. border stretches across the Atlantic Ocean and deep into Eastern Europe, Geography-challenged Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) said Saturday as the House passes a $61 billion Ukraine aid bill. He made the argument earlier on the House floor.
Mr. Connolly criticized Republicans for insisting that the southern border (the actual U.S. border) be addressed before considering foreign aid. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) held this position for many years until he appeared to change his mind after a visit to the White House on February 28, 2024. .
“Some people say, ‘We have to deal with the border first,'” Connolly said on the House floor. “The border between Ukraine and Russia is our Border! “
Republicans, furious at being betrayed by their own speaker after months of fighting aid to Ukraine, called out the absurdity of Connolly’s speech.
In response, Congressman Andrew Clyde lamented, “Simply put, this is America’s last unified party.”Clyde share Amazing video of X.
Connolly’s geography lessons didn’t end there. “This is the dividing line between corrupt dictatorships and freedom-loving people who seek a democratic way of life,” he continued. “Do we have a stake in the outcome? Yes, definitely.”

But his claims were not “undeniable” to most Republicans, with 112 voting against aid to Ukraine and just 101 voting yes. Johnson sided with Connolly and other Democrats, going against the party’s clear majority by supporting the bill, again violating the Hastert Rule.
In Connolly’s view, not all of America’s borders are equally noteworthy. He voted Saturday against a bill to secure America’s southern border.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson chose to move the border bill under a suspension of rules, so it needed two-thirds support to pass. He received majority support but was defeated by a vote of 215 to 199.
