A South Carolina man miraculously survived a gruesome alligator attack that he believed would be his final moments of life.
William Georgitis of West Ashley was scuba diving in the Cooper River Monday afternoon. He searches for fossils at the bottom of rivers and has dived to this particular location about 40 times in the past six years.
Georgitis surfaced when he realized he was being targeted by a giant crocodile.
“He was about 20 feet away from me when I surfaced, but as soon as he saw me he jumped out of the water. I mean, he came at me and almost hydroplaned at the top. He was very determined to get there,” Georgitis said. WCBD-TV.
“I raised my arm defensively and he grabbed it. I mean, he was huge. I don’t even know how big he was because I was right there. He felt big. Ta.”
“I knew his first action after he grabbed me was to roll me over,” Diver said. “So I gave him a bear hug to keep him from rolling me over. I wrapped my arms around his head and my legs around his neck.”
The beast dragged him and his scuba tank underwater, and his arm became trapped within the crocodile’s constricting jaws.
“I got the screwdriver I used at the bottom of the river and stabbed him in the eye, and he shook me like a ragdoll,” Georgitis recalled. “He threw me off. I didn’t want him to roll again, so I held on to him.”
“I guess he was tired of fighting me, so he probably wanted to drown me at that point,” he said.
The crocodile dragged him to the bottom of the river. Georgitis estimates the river is about 50 feet deep.
Georgitis slammed his shoulders and neck into the riverbed as the beast’s weight pressed down on him.
“I couldn’t get close to his eyes again, so I went to his gum line and tried to stab him between the teeth, where the soft part is, and it seemed to work,” George said. Tis said. “He also shook me pretty hard and at that point I ran out of air.”
“I knew I was going to die right then and there,” Georgitis said.
But he survived an incredibly horrifying animal attack to tell his story.
“I twisted my hips with all my might trying to rip his arm off at the elbow,” Georgitis said. “Then I got out. I don’t know how it got out, but I thought I’d peeled it off and I came back to the surface and it was hanging like a wet noodle. The guy in the boat grabbed me. Don’t pull yourself up. I couldn’t do it. ”
Georgitis was rushed to the hospital. Thankfully he didn’t lose his arm to the ferocious crocodile attack, but he may need surgery in the future.
He has contacted the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources about the animal attack and plans to send a team to search for the alligator.
Georgitis warns other divers about this dangerous creature.
“This crocodile is very aggressive and is in a place where other people jump in. This is a famous place and this is huge. He didn’t take a second to attack me. He As soon as they saw me, they attacked me, ”Georgitis warned. “If there are other people diving, please be careful.”
