Use social media and search engines to find local eco-friendly shops and businesses. In addition to purchasing from your local store, please consider purchasing from eco-friendly shops nationwide. This requires packaging, but many of the containers and packaging that eco-friendly companies use for shipping are also recyclable.

2. Plant a tree

Why not join a group-sponsored tree-planting event near you on Earth Day, or plant a tree at home? Search online or on social media to find events that are recruiting volunteers.

Earth Day was founded more than 50 years ago and has focused on the environment ever since.

If you want to plant a tree in your home, consider one that blooms in the warmer months or one that provides shade in your backyard. If you want to grow trees that benefit us every day beyond carbon dioxide, find a tree that bears fruit.

3. Cook all-green meals

Consider changing your diet to include more sustainable foods. Buy locally grown goods, avoid throwing away leftovers while they still taste good, and consider planting your own garden.

5. Buy food at local markets

Visiting your local farmers market is a great way to help the planet and support small businesses. It’s also a way to introduce new healthy eating habits to yourself and your family.

6. Walk or bike to work

Choosing to walk or bike to work instead of driving to work reduces air pollution and reduces emissions into the atmosphere.

Rollerblades are also making a comeback, so they might be worth buying.

If possible, use Earth Day as an opportunity to enjoy some fresh air on your way to and from work, the gym, the store, etc.

7. Take pictures of nature

Earth Day is about celebrating nature as well as focusing on how we can help the earth.

From flowers to the sky to wildlife, we take photos of everything around us and share them through social media and conversations.

You never know how your excitement will affect others.

8. Strategize fun ways to reuse items

Get creative with reusable items. There are many easy crafts you can make for Earth Day using simple everyday items that would otherwise be thrown away.

You can make a bird feeder out of an old milk bottle, paint an old can and use it as a plant pot, or repurpose old clothes and old towels to use as a rag.

If you have old clothes that are in good condition, please consider donating them. Donating old clothes and other items is a great thing, but we want to make sure we’re giving others high-quality items with no holes or stains.

Donating used clothing saves energy and gives items a second life by making them available for use by others. It’s much more progressive for the environment to put your old clothes in the hands of others than to throw them in a landfill.

10. Grow a garden

How empowering would it be to be able to eat the food you grew in your own backyard? Whether you want to start from seeds or small plants, starting a garden is great for the environment and your health.

If you’ve never gardened before, start small with herbs and grow your garden each year. You may find it’s a fun activity and save money on purchasing expensive herbs.

11. Spend time outside

It may seem like a no-brainer, but be sure to get outside if the weather is nice.

Make time at some point during the day to appreciate the nature around you, whether it’s just a quick walk with your dog, stroller, or just yourself.

Breathe in the fresh air and remember how amazing our planet is.

12. Reduce plastic use

Use Earth Day as the first day to start reducing your plastic usage.

There are two easy ways to incorporate more eco-friendly items into your daily life.

The first is to buy a refillable water bottle. Second, instead of using plastic bags every time you shop, buy a few large reusable bags or collapsible carts to take to the store.
