Biden condemns Florida’s 6-week abortion ban, blames Trump

President Biden on Tuesday condemned Florida’s six-week abortion ban, placing the blame squarely on former President Trump and taking effect in just over a week.

In a brief campaign speech in Tampa, Biden slammed the presumptive Republican nominee for appointing judges who ultimately overturned Roe v. Wade and ended constitutional abortion rights.

“Next week, one of the most extreme anti-abortion laws in the country goes into effect right here in Florida, criminalizing reproductive health care before a woman even knows if she’s pregnant,” Biden said. . “Let me be clear: There is one person responsible for this nightmare. And he gets the credit and brags about it. Donald Trump.”

The Biden campaign has made abortion rights one of its top issues, seeking to remind voters almost daily of President Trump’s record on the issue.

Biden’s team has run ads featuring testimonies from women affected by state abortion bans, and Vice President Harris and other senior administration officials have crisscrossed the country to debate Republicans and Trump on abortion regulations. He harshly criticizes Mr.

Opinion polls show a majority of voters oppose abortion bans, and Republicans are being held accountable for their abortion policies, suffering a series of defeats at the ballot box.

Florida has been voting more Republican in recent elections, but Tuesday’s speech was part of the Biden campaign’s effort to use the state Supreme Court’s abortion ruling as leverage to reverse the state’s position.

Earlier this month, the court ruled that there is no right to abortion in the state and upheld the 15-week abortion ban, with an automatic six-week abortion ban taking effect 30 days later. became.

The campaign also points to a November ballot measure that would allow Floridians to vote on guaranteeing access to abortion up to the term of viability (about 24 weeks). If passed, the initiative would overturn the six-week ban.

President Trump criticized Florida’s six-week curfew and Arizona’s near-total ban. But he also said that decisions about the legality of abortion are, of course, left to each state.

In his remarks, Biden mocked Trump’s sale of $60 Bibles and encouraged support for Trump among evangelical voters.

“[Trump] Dobbs said his decision was a miracle. Maybe it comes from the Bible he’s trying to sell,” Biden said.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it wasn’t a miracle. It was a political deal… by overlooking their own moral and character flaws in exchange for a promise to appoint a Supreme Court justice who would overturn Mr. Roe. of the evangelical base,” Biden added.

President Trump has said he does not support a federal ban on abortion, but Biden said he cannot trust President Trump.

“Don’t think he is [not] Now he has a deal with MAGA extremists to ban abortion nationwide in every state, because he’s making it happen,” Biden said.
