Capitals head coach Spencer Carberry hit Rangers forward Artemi with a big hit on TJ Oshie that eliminated the Caps from Game 2 of the first round playoff series against the Blueshirts. Panarin was “confused” as to why he wasn’t penalized.
Panarin appeared to take a high on Oshie as he tried to check him midway through the third period, but the latter was ejected due to a concussion monitor’s decision.
“They said it wasn’t a minor penalty, that was the only explanation I got. I asked some additional questions about leaving the foot, the contact point, but the difficult part is that the spotter didn’t know what to do with him. ,” Carberry told reporters after the game. “We look at the video at the beginning of the year to see what we’re looking for in terms of concussion symptoms and hits and who we need to take out. For me, when the spotter takes him out must have some kind of contact.
“So I was a little confused that he was removed by the spotter and then not given a minor on-ice penalty.”
The Rangers star appeared to grab Oshie’s head between his back and shoulders while batting, causing him to fall to the ice.
A Capitals athletic trainer came out and observed Oshie while authorities confirmed what happened.
Moments later, forward Connor McMichael defended Oshie and went after Panarin in retaliation.
As it turned out, McMichael was the only one penalized during this sequence, resulting in a power play for the Rangers and Oshie being ejected from the game by the concussion spotter.
Tom Wilson, a player with a history of antics and physical play (especially against the Rangers in 2021), takes issue with the fact that Oshie was vulnerable when Panarin was in the RBI. It seemed like there was.
“That’s one thing he seems to be chasing a little bit,” Wilson explained, though he admitted he hadn’t seen the hit live. According to Hockey News. “Osh is in a vulnerable position and he gets him high. I don’t know if he understands him. I don’t see him. It’s one of those things that everyone stands up for, you know. Like, he definitely went after him. I mean, it’s playoff hockey and you’re going to get beat up, you think Osh is going to be okay, so that’s number one. It’s important.”
The Rangers won Game 2 4-3 to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Things move to Washington, D.C., where the Caps and Rangers will play Game 3 at Capital One Arena on Friday.
