His first visit, on June 13, 2023, appeared to be for the Juneteenth concert on the South Lawn of the White House, where both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris delivered greetings. The purpose of her second visit on December 14, 2023, remains unclear, but she appears to have attended an evening reception along with hundreds of other guests.

The White House and Mr. Barry did not respond to requests for comment.

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser appointed Barry to her current position and said she is “grateful for women” like Barry to serve in 2021. Her praise for Farrakhan, who heads the religious group Nation of Islam, came in October 2022 at a private event honoring her late husband, former Washington D.C. Mayor Marion Barry.

Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam have been harshly criticized by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which were founded to combat defamation of Jews. The ADL called Farrakhan “one of the most prominent anti-Semites,” and the SPLC classified the Nation of Islam as a hate group.
