Christie says Biden ‘stupid’ for not reaching out to him

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) said President Biden did not ask Christie to help with his 2024 re-election campaign after Christie called off his bid for the White House earlier this year. “It was pretty stupid,” he said.

in 90 minute conversation In a talk hosted at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics on Tuesday night, Mr. Christie told The Washington Post’s Lee Ann Caldwell that he had not spoken to Mr. Biden since he withdrew from the presidential race. Told.

Asked whether Biden should contact him and ask for help, Christie said: “It would be pretty stupid for him not to do that.”

Biden and former President Trump are already the presumptive candidates of their respective parties, and the 2024 election is almost certain to be a rematch of 2020.

Christie, a Trump ally turned critic, has vowed not to vote for the former president “under any circumstances,” and reiterated that belief on Tuesday. But he also said he would not vote for Biden, citing Biden’s age as the main reason.

Still, Mr. Christie said Mr. Biden should still ask him questions, recalling a conversation he had with former President George W. Bush.

When Mr. Bush ran for New Jersey governor several years ago, he advised Mr. Christie to specifically ask for the public’s vote, and “people like to be asked,” Mr. Christie recalled on Tuesday. Ta.

“If this was George W. Bush, my phone would have rang five minutes after I got off the race,” Christie said.

“We need to work together. That would be a smart move for Biden, but for now no,” Christie later added. “And I know he has my phone number because right after he won, I said some positive things on ABC and I got in the car to go back to New Jersey and… He called me and said, “I heard you.” Thank you very much. It’s important that Republicans are saying that.”

“That’s why he has that number. I haven’t changed it,” Christie added.

Christie said his lack of contact with Biden may have something to do with partisanship, and wondered if Biden’s staffers were worried about losing the party’s far-left wing. He said he thought so.

A Biden campaign spokesperson said the campaign’s ads target non-Trump Republican voters and supporters of former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, the last Republican challenger to Trump in this year’s presidential race. He denied this proposal, pointing out that Republican nomination.

As soon as Haley withdrew from the Republican primary, the Biden campaign launched a strategy to bring Haley’s supporters into the Biden campaign.

“Donald Trump has made it clear that he does not want Nikki Haley supporters. Let me be clear: There is a place for them in my campaign,” Biden said in a statement last month. Ta.
