Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes star in Danny Boyle’s sequel to the zombie horror classic 28 Years Later.
The new film marks a reunion between Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland, who directed and wrote the original 2002 film and executive produced the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later. .
28 Years Later is the first in a planned sequel trilogy. Early this month, Deadline reported Candyman director Nia DiCosta is reportedly in talks to direct the second film, which will be shot consecutively with the first.
Plot details for the sequels remain vague, but each film had a $75 million budget and now boasts massive star power, having been shot for $8 million and starring relative unknown Cillian Murphy in his breakout role. 28 days later’ is very different.
Murphy played a bicycle courier who wakes up from a coma into a post-apocalyptic Britain ravaged by a virus that turns its victims into bloodthirsty invaders. The Oscar-winning Oppenheimer star returns to “28 Years Later” as an executive producer.
Described by the Guardian in 2002 as a “muscular, fearless piece of filmmaking”, 28 Days Later became an instant hit upon its release, achieving astonishing box office success. The film is largely credited with re-animating the horror genre and popularizing the depiction of zombies as fast-moving, terrifying attackers rather than lumbering corpses.
