It is natural for people to be concerned about the potential for artificial intelligence to cause problems in society in the near future. On a personal level, you may be worried about a future where artificial intelligence becomes pervasive. Your job Or go back in time and create a Terminator that tries to eliminate your younger self. (Admittedly, we may be overthinking it.)

One of the concerns about AI on a personal level, which you should know about because it’s a work in progress, is the creation of deepfake photos. This includes taking away the most basic privacy right: the right to protect the image of one’s body.

Two German artists recently created a camera called nuka It uses AI to create deepfake photos of the subject with their clothes removed. Automatic removal of a subject’s clothing occurs in near real-time, accelerating the creepy factor exponentially.

Why would someone create an AI camera that takes off clothes?

Two German artists, Matthias Wegh and Benedikt Gross, decided to create a camera to demonstrate the implications of rapid advances in AI. As they were trying to think of the worst possible uses for AI that would impact someone’s privacy, they realized that the technology needed to create a camera like NUCA was already possible.

What is artificial intelligence (AI)?

The two artists hope that people will consider the dangers of continuing to develop AI technologies like this, and that expectations of privacy may be diminished. They hope this will spark a debate about the direction of AI.

How does a camera that digitally strips clothing work?

The German artist used 3D design and printing software to create the lens and shell to control the camera. It then handles image capture using the smartphone inside the shell. NUCA passes the photo to the cloud and applies AI to remove the subject’s clothing.

Of course, NUCA doesn’t actually create the photos. your naked body. Instead, the AI recreates what your naked body would look like by analyzing your gender, face, age, and other aspects of your body shape.

Doesn’t deepfake nude photography technology already exist?

Deepfake nude photos (usually of celebrities) have long been circulating on porn websites, but NUCA’s photos require little technical know-how.

Even more frightening, NUCA can perform this process in about 10 seconds. The immediacy of creating deepfake nude photos is what sets NUCA apart from other fake nude photos that typically require significant editing skill and time.

NUCA’s deepfake dilemma: artistic innovation or ethical violation?

Bottom line: Using the technology found in NUCA, anyone could potentially create deepfake nude photos of almost anyone else within seconds. NUCA does not ask for permission to remove clothing in photos.

I would like to reiterate that the two artists have no intention of allowing others to use NUCA for commercial gain. They plan to demonstrate their functionality at an art exhibition in Berlin in late June, sparking a national debate.

But the next person who develops similar technology will do it in very different ways, such as blackmailing people by threatening to publish fake nude photos that others may not necessarily be fake. you may choose to use.

Cart important points

Even if it feels like AI is expanding significantly in dozens of different directions at once, it’s not that far off. Some of those directions are helpful to society, while others are downright scary. As deepfakes continue to become more and more real, it will become increasingly difficult to discern the line between a fake digital world and reality. Protecting our privacy will almost certainly become increasingly difficult as AI strips us of our safety equipment and, in some cases, even our clothing.
