The University of Southern California (USC) canceled a major graduation ceremony this week, citing apparent safety concerns, after anti-Israel demonstrators attempted to camp and were cleared by Los Angeles police.
As Breitbart News reported, anti-Israel protesters attempted to take over the campus, as they had done at other universities in apparently well-organized and well-funded campaigns. Additionally, USC canceled the valedictorian’s speech after an online post revealed that he supported the annihilation of the state of Israel.
In a statement, USC said: Said (emphasis in original):
As in previous years, the university will host dozens of graduation events. This includes all the traditional individual school graduation ceremonies where students walk across the stage, have their names announced, have their photos taken, and receive their diplomas. In keeping with tradition, we host all PhD ceremonies, special celebrations, departmental activities and receptions.
New safety measures have been put in place this year, which will significantly increase the time needed to process the large number of guests coming to campus. As a result, we will no longer be able to hold our Main Stage Ceremony, which traditionally brings 65,000 students, families, and friends on campus at the same time, in a short time frame of 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
We understand that this is unfortunate. But we want to make this graduation ceremony academically meaningful, memorable, and uniquely Southern California by providing a place to gather with family, friends, and faculty, a celebratory release of doves, and a Trojan Horse March. We’re adding many new activities and celebrations, including performances by the corps. band.
