Americans face ‘direct’ threats from foreign dictators, terrorists, migrants: 3 things to know

The US faces an “increasingly fragile world order” strained by competition from rival world powers and foreign humanitarian disasters that encourage immigration, according to a US spy report.

The intelligence community has released its annual threat assessment report “focusing on the most immediate and serious threats” facing the country over the coming year.

Unsurprisingly, the biggest threat comes from an “ambitious but anxious” China and a “confrontational” Russia.

And conflicts overseas orchestrated by terrorist groups have far-reaching effects. The report cited the October 7 invasion of Israel, which sparked months of protests and hostilities across the United States.

The 41-page report, released in February, cited several issues, along with regional instability that requires U.S. attention “as states and non-state actors struggle in this evolving world order.” Contains threats.

Instability in Venezuela, exacerbated by civil war in Haiti and a corrupt regime backed by China, Iran and Russia, is forcing people to flee and fueling a surge in immigration to the United States.

These are the three threats outlined by the intelligence community.

1.China

The report specifically mentions four countries: China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, but says none poses a greater threat than China.

“China has the ability to compete directly with the United States and its allies and to alter the rules-based world order in ways that support China’s form of power and governance vis-à-vis the United States,” the report said.

There are concerns that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) may seek to influence the 2024 US election “at some level to silence critics of China and widen divisions in American society.”

“Chinese actors are increasing their ability to conduct covert influence operations and spread disinformation,” the spy report said. “Even if the Chinese government imposes limits on these activities, individuals not under the direct supervision of the Chinese government may attempt election influence activities that they perceive to be in line with Beijing’s goals.”

President Xi Jinping still considers Taiwan to be legitimately part of the People’s Republic of China. The possibility of an invasion similar to Russia’s attack on Ukraine is always looming and has become a “flashpoint” in the conflict between China and the United States, the report said.

With advances in artificial intelligence exploding, China is the United States’ biggest competitor in the technological arms race, and Beijing is trying to “fast-track” its progress.

2. Russia

No wonder Russia, along with China, ranks high in the 41-page report on threats to America and its allies.

“Russia is engaged in widespread efforts to disrupt Western alliances, undermine America’s global standing, and sow domestic discord, including among voters in the United States and America’s partners around the world. “As such, it remains a serious threat from foreign influence,” the intelligence community said. the report says.

Russia, like a limp wild animal, “almost certainly” does not want a direct military conflict with US or NATO forces, but the threat of nuclear weapons and chemical warfare still exists.

Russia “maintains the largest and most diverse stockpile of nuclear weapons,” including long-range capabilities and underwater delivery systems designed to penetrate or bypass U.S. missile defenses.

Chemical weapons have been used in at least two recent assassination attempts, in 2020 and 2018.

3. Immigration inspection

The report details several countries torn apart by internal unrest, government corruption and economic discontent, fueling cycles of rebellion and violence.

The report summarizes the current situation in six countries, including Haiti, which is mired in civil war led by warlord Jimmy “Barbeque” Chélisier, and corruption in the Venezuelan government.

The Haitian government has lost control over the warring gangs, and the Haitian National Police is severely understaffed and overwhelmed by the gangs.

The report was released before the gang released 4,000 prisoners after days of gun battles with police in early March.

In Venezuela, disputed President Nicolas Maduro is close to a dictator and is likely to remain in power. Maduro’s government has the support of China, Russia and Iran, allowing the country to avoid sanctions.

Despite evidence of “blatant” voter fraud, President Maduro sought to ensure his victory by banning opposition candidates from holding public office, restricting media coverage, and forcing the National Election Commission to ensure his victory, according to the report. He had close allies.

More than 80% of the country lives below the poverty line, and nearly 8 million Venezuelans have fled the country since 2017.

Situations in both countries are accelerating the U.S. immigration crisis

“Conflict, violence, political instability, deteriorating economic conditions, and natural disasters continue to create a growing number of people displaced within their borders and abroad. “The ability to manage the situation will be strained,” the report says.

The report says the United States and the Western Hemisphere in general are “likely to continue” experiencing high levels of immigration.

The number of people displaced in 2022 was three times the average of the previous 10 years, the intelligence community noted.

“Due to political repression and a lack of economic opportunity, Cuban, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan migration will continue, but these regimes continue to blame U.S. sanctions and policies for undocumented migration from their countries. will be condemned,” the report said.
