Malik Nabers a perfect prize for Joe Schoen not reaching for a QB

Joe Schon hit a double off the wall when he selected wide receiver Malik Nabors with the No. 6 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

So let’s cue John Stirling. “It’s expensive… it’s far… it’s… caught.”

Schoen swung against the fence for Drake Maye’s home run, but Patriots owner Robert Kraft caught it on the warning track.

Pick up Daniel Jones’ obituary.

In exchange, Jones was given the No. 1 receiver title for the first time in his career.

After having too many strikeouts in the draft, he was an explosive player who increased his doubles to triples — we call him Malik the Freak.

A player who could make Jones a better quarterback and Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka better play-callers. You better believe Daboll is going to try to take play-calling duties away from the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator going forward.

A player who can turn a 10-yard pass from Jones into a 60-yard touchdown.

He’s a player with breathtaking skills who could help turn the Giants from the tortoise to the hare.

At the very least, he’s a guy that gives Jones a chance to play like Danny Dimes again.

Of course, franchise quarterbacks are always home run candidates. In today’s quarterback-driven NFL, it’s every GM’s duty to find a quarterback who can compete with Patrick Mahomes and the young players chasing the Super Bowl every year.

If the quarterback isn’t right, you don’t have a chance.

If you don’t have a quarterback who believes he can win a Super Bowl, you probably won’t win a Super Bowl.

But it’s much better to love a quarterback who makes a big hit from No. 6 to No. 3, and it’s much better to love a quarterback who gets drafted No. 6.

Shane didn’t love JJ McCarthy. The Vikings loved JJ McCarthy when they traded him from No. 11 to No. 10 to select him.

Schoen chose not to draft a quarterback just to draft a quarterback a year after signing Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract with an escape hatch after the 2024 season. did the right thing.

Thanks to Jones, Drew Lock, and Tommy Cattletz, Schoen was able to avoid feeling the need to force draft a quarterback he doesn’t love.

Drafting Malik the Freak won’t solve the Giants’ franchise quarterback woes, but at least it won’t solve the same fatalities other teams have had with Ryan Leaf, JaMarcus Russell, Jeff George and Josh. This will prevent them from making serious mistakes. Rosen and Trey Lance, Mac Jones and Zach Wilson, and more.

It gave the Giants the kind of fast-hitting ability that Odell Beckham Jr. once gave them.

“He’s got quickness, explosiveness, good run after the catch. He’s got a great mindset in terms of playing style and played well in big games,” Daboll said.

Shane stood at the corner of Emergency Lane and Despair Road, not blinking.

He threw Jones a lifeline and texted him before the nomination was announced.

“He’s very motivated,” Shane said. “I texted him Malik’s phone number. That was one of the first things I did.”

Shane and Daboll could have invested in McCarthy or Michael Penix Jr. and made a year’s worth of money, but they decided their priority now was to give themselves a chance to win.

“I’m a great teammate, a great leader and just an all-around great football player who can play in different positions, create separation and open up big opportunities for the quarterback to throw the ball to me. And when I’m not there, he has a dog-like mentality.” That’s on the field,” Nabers said.

Shane and Daboll went looking for Maye, perhaps because he reminded them of a young Josh Allen, but Jones had suffered two neck injuries and a torn ACL. I don’t know if he’ll be ready, but I think it’s because they knew it was a dangerous job to trust Jones. The beginning of training camp.

“We had a lot of discussions with a lot of teams. I won’t go into details,” Schoen said.

Of course, some Giants fans may not be drafted this high again, and the 2024 graduate was lauded as a prolific quarterback, so Shane is the new franchise quarterback. Some are disappointed and disillusioned with not getting a Buck.

For a variety of reasons, Jones wasn’t promoted in his second year in the Daboll offense, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it feels good to have a general manager who has the courage to stick to his guns and not panic. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. .

Nabers won’t turn 21 until July.

“He’s a great kid, very competitive and motivated, and I’m excited to have him,” Shane said.

The Giants had done their homework and were not concerned about Neighbors having a weapon in his pocket on Bourbon Street 14 months ago. He was not charged. “I love his personality,” Daboll said.

Nabors was all smiles on stage in Detroit, wearing a silver LEEK necklace and giggling on a conference call when asked about meeting Daboll.

“I thought he could protect me,” Nabers said.

Very few people can. That’s why he’s a giant.
