After Atlanta selected Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick, things looked serious as video footage from inside the Falcons’ 2024 NFL Draft room surfaced online.
Falcons GM Terry Fontenot and owner Arthur Blank are reportedly in serious talks after the NFL commissioner announced the pick.
As seen in the video, the animated Fontnott appeared to be explaining something to Blank, who interjected at one point.
Since the Falcons signed veteran QB Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract with $100 million guaranteed in March, many believe Blank may have doubts about the pick. I was guessing.
“Kirk Cousins is our quarterback,” Fontenot told reporters after the first round. “We’re so excited about Kirk. We’re so excited about this team. Michael Penix… we’re talking about the future. You see the future.
“You look at the big picture. We’re very excited about that quarterback room, and again Kirk is our quarterback. But adding Michael Penix, thinking about the future… ”
Cousins was unaware that the Falcons had acquired Penix with the No. 8 pick, his agent, Mike McCartney, said. NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah.

“Pretty certain [former Patriots head coach and GM] Bill Belichick wouldn’t have taken a quarterback there.” someone joked.
“He will receive the HR email tomorrow morning.” another said.
Cousins, who turns 36 in August, is recovering from an Achilles injury suffered last season, so the Falcons could be proactive.
Fontenot said in Tuesday’s pre-draft press conference that Cousins played during Atlanta’s voluntary minicamp earlier this week.
He also expressed confidence in Cousins. Cousins previously said he would be “full speed ahead” before training camp in July.
