104-year-old time capsule discovered during demolition of Minnesota high school

During a demolition project at a former high school in Minnesota, construction workers discovered a time capsule from 1920 among the rubble.

The capsule was buried at Owatonna High School in Owatonna, Minnesota, and was discovered when construction workers pulled down the school’s front pillars and doors.

The time capsule was opened during a community event Monday, and inside were found a 1920 Owatonna Public School teacher and administrator directory, a high school magnet, the high school newspaper, three local newspapers and financial statements.

“We were thrilled to discover that the time capsule was placed in the cornerstone of the high school,” Jeff Elstad, the district’s superintendent, told Fox Television. “It is always exciting to learn about the history of our community and the visionaries who built great schools that will serve so many students for generations.”

“We don’t know exactly what will be included, but many of the items, such as newspapers and local history, are typical of what would be included in a time capsule. They specifically share information about the school at the time. It was especially fun discovering the items to do,” he added.

The Owatonna High School Museum Committee is working with the Steele County Historical Society to dry and preserve the items. A decision will then be made as to which items will be displayed in the school and which will be transferred to the Historical Society’s collection.

Mr Elstad said the discovery allowed the community to reflect on its local history.

“We highly value the historical importance of time capsules and are committed to continuing to preserve our history for generations to come,” he said.
