Wisconsin Man Found Guilty After Killing, Sexually Assaulting 20-Month-Old

A Wisconsin man has been found guilty of sexually abusing and killing a 20-month-old baby girl and abusing the infant’s mother.

Marshawn Giles was found guilty by a jury on Friday of 15 charges, including first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree sexual assault of a child with serious bodily injury, and second-degree sexual assault. It was Three of his 18 criminal charges against Giles were dropped.

The toddler suffered multiple skull fractures and died in Madison in 2022 from blunt force trauma to the head, authorities said.

Additionally, blunt force injuries consistent with sexual assault were noted elsewhere during the autopsy.

Giles’ trial is scheduled to enter phase two next week.by wisconsin state journalThe defense attorney will attempt to prove that the father had a mental illness or defect and was not criminally responsible for his actions at the time of the child’s death.

If Giles is declared mentally insane, he will not be released. He will reportedly be placed in the custody of the state Department of Health and then held in a state mental health facility. Every six months, he could request to be released on community supervision.

Nevertheless, Mr. Giles would automatically be sentenced to life in prison for both the child sexual assault and murder convictions if the jury finds he is not mentally ill. Additionally, a conviction for second-degree sexual assault carries a maximum sentence of 46 years in prison and long-term supervision.
