Alleged Burglar Transported to Hospital After Arizona Homeowner Opens Fire

Shortly after 4 a.m. Monday, a Surprise, Arizona, homeowner shot and killed one of two robbery suspects.

FOX10 Phoenix report Officers responded to the scene and took both suspects into custody. The suspect who was shot was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

One of the suspects was identified as 19-year-old Kayson Nelson. The second person’s name has not been released because he is a juvenile.

AZ family I got it. said Nancy McRaven, a neighbor of the homeowner. “It’s almost unthinkable, especially in the early morning hours. I never expected something like that to happen, especially in such a nice quiet area like this, where it’s always quiet.”

During the investigation, detectives learned that the homeowner involved in the incident was currently renting to a tenant who was known to the suspect. The suspects told investigators they came to visit tenants under Miranda warnings. However, Surprise police detectives, with the assistance of a K-9 unit, discovered firearms and other items indicating the suspect intended to commit a robbery.

Nelson, 19, “has been charged with several felonies.”
