Schools Have Let Lefties Run Wild While Other Views Get ‘Canceled’

On Monday’s broadcast of Newsmax TV’s “The Record,” U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) said schools like Columbia University are not responding quickly enough to encampments and demonstrations on campus. However, he said, “Many voices are being raised now.” It is being left behind, diminished, and canceled. ”

After moderator Greta Van Susteren said there was a lack of debate on college campuses, Phillips said, “And that’s a very dangerous sign for America, because we don’t encourage debate and we don’t have enough debate.” Because we can only survive if we disagree without showing pleasure.” So far things have gone pretty well. But Greta, there’s no question, look, I’m a progressive and a moderate Democrat, but I believe deeply that we should have college campuses that encourage debate, disagreement, and deliberation. I am a former vice chair of the Problem Solvers Council here in Congress. I love my Republican colleagues. Because I learned conservative principles from them, and they learned from us Democrats. It’s the same culture that should be the norm on college campuses, but like you, I know that many voices are being excluded, diminished, and canceled right now. And we need to reinvent and reinvest in thoughtful debate to ensure that America’s youth are critical thinkers, disagree without offense, and most importantly, empathetically. I think you need to understand your responsibility to understand.[ing] My point of view is my own, but I have to walk in someone else’s shoes. I don’t think our schools are doing a good job, and given the events of the past year, it’s clear that we have a lot of work to do. ”

He added, “I was glad that the Colombian government finally issued the letter and finally started taking steps. I think they should have done it right away and set a standard for the whole country. I think there are some lessons we can learn about the consequences that could actually be very helpful.”
