South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem defended her decision to kill a young dog years ago.
guardian Noem reported that her upcoming book, “No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward,” details the story about her 14-month-old dog, Cricket.
Noem recalled a time when she and her older dogs took Cricket pheasant hunting, hoping to calm him down and teach him behavior, the newspaper said. However, she was “going crazy with excitement, chasing birds and having the best time of her life.”
When Noem stopped to talk to her family after the hunt, the dog escaped from the truck and killed the family’s chickens.[ing] “One chicken at a time, he chewed it up in one bite, then dropped it and attacked another chicken,” Nomu said, according to the outlet. When she grabbed her canines, Cricket said, “he tried to whip me to bite me.” “She accepted a check for the amount they asked for and helped dispose of the bodies scattered at the crime scene,” she reportedly said.
“I hated that dog,” Noem said, describing the dog as “untrainable,” “dangerous to anyone who came into contact with it,” and “worthless as a hunting dog,” the Guardian reported.
“I realized I had to let her go,” Noem recalled, according to the newspaper. “It wasn’t a fun job for her,” she said. “But it had to be done.”
Nomu’s story of killing the young dog sparked huge criticism, but she defended her decision.
“I can understand why some people would be upset about the 20-year-old story of Cricket, one of the farm’s working dogs, in my upcoming book, No Going Back,” she says. tweeted. “As a matter of fact, South Dakota law states that any dog that attacks and kills livestock can be euthanized. Given that Cricket has shown aggressive behavior, including biting humans, I am not sure what my actions are. “I decided,” she said. “I followed the law and was a responsible parent, dog owner, and neighbor.”
