US colleges where students have been arrested over anti-Israel protests

More than 1,000 college students have been arrested across the United States in anti-Israel protests that have spawned “tent cities” at some of America’s most prestigious universities.

The chaotic protests were spurred by the Gaza Solidarity Encampment that sprang up at Columbia University, and more than 100 demonstrators were arrested on April 18.

Since then, police have arrested protesters on more than 25 campuses across the country, with more than 100 arrests at some universities.

columbia university

Protesters have occupied the lawn of Columbia University’s Manhattan campus for nearly two weeks, and in the first attempt to clear the encampment on April 18, NYPD officers arrested 108 people.

The majority of those arrested on the Morningside Heights campus were released with citations.

new york university

On April 22nd, a total of 120 people were arrested at New York University, with 116 protesters receiving citations for trespassing and four people receiving citations for charges including resisting arrest.

cal poly humboldt

Three people were initially arrested last week at the University of California, Humboldt, but the university issued a final warning to students to remove them from the encampment by April 30.

By 2 a.m. Tuesday, police were given permission to raid the encampment and at least 25 more people were arrested. The Los Angeles Times reported.

University of Southern California

On April 24, police were ordered to remove demonstrators from the University of Southern California and arrested 93 demonstrators.

Many chose to leave, but those who remained remained defiant and were arrested one after another without incident.

yale university

On April 21, approximately 47 anti-Israel demonstrators were arrested at Yale University after police stormed the campus in full riot gear.

University of Texas at Austin

A total of 57 protesters were arrested at the UT Austin campus last week after students attempted to take over the campus lawn and participate in a demonstration against Israel’s war in Gaza.

An additional 79 protesters were taken into custody Monday, according to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office.

University of North Carolina

Approximately 30 people were arrested at UNC-Chapel Hill on Tuesday morning after refusing to leave the camp as ordered by police, the university said in a statement.

Amid the crackdown at UNC, a video circulating online showed students taking down the American flag from the campus flagpole and raising the Palestinian flag.

University of South Carolina

The University of South Carolina confirmed that two students were arrested after a small protest outside a dining hall near a residence hall on April 23.

The demonstrators were disrupting a “Midnight Breakfast” event being held at the same venue.

Virginia Tech

On Sunday, a total of 82 protesters were booked at Virginia Tech, including 53 current students on campus. Fox News reported.

Police raided the encampment on Sunday night and arrested resisting students, using zip ties to take them away.

virginia commonwealth university

Police arrested 13 people at Virginia Commonwealth University on Monday night, and the school confirmed six students were among those detained.

princeton university

Thirteen people were arrested after a sit-in at the school’s administrative office on Monday night. According to NorthJersey.com.

The students were arrested for trespassing and have been banned from campus, the university said.

indiana university

At Indiana University, 33 protesters were arrested Thursday and 23 more were arrested Saturday after clashes with police at a campus encampment.

emerson college

On April 25, a total of 118 protesters were arrested at the Emerson College encampment, and Boston police announced that four officers suffered minor injuries in clashes with demonstrators.

northeastern university

Ninety-eight people were arrested over the weekend at Northeastern University, 29 of whom were identified as students and six more were employees. NBC10 reported.

University of Washington

About 100 protesters were arrested at the University of Washington on Saturday, including 23 students and at least four staff members, according to President Andrew Martin, who denounced the protests as “a dark and sad day for the University of Washington.”

arizona

Arizona State Police arrested 69 people Saturday at an unauthorized encampment set up on the Temple campus.

University of Colorado Denver

A total of 44 people were arrested at the University of Colorado Denver on Friday after the school said an encampment on its Auraria campus violated university policy.

University of Illinois

Last Friday, two men who are not students at the University of Illinois were arrested and charged with rioting during an encampment protest on campus. WCIA report.

The Champaign County State’s Attorney identified the men as George Vasilatos, 25, and Christopher Zell, 37.

University of Minnesota

Eight students and one staff member were arrested during protests at a University of Minnesota encampment last week, according to the University of Minnesota.

emory university

Emory University officials announced that 28 people, including 20 students, were arrested during protests targeting the school and the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center last week.

University of Georgia

About 17 people were arrested Monday at a joint protest held by students and members of the Athens community on the University of Georgia campus. WSBTV coverage.

University of Florida

Nine people were arrested during an anti-Israel demonstration on the University of Florida’s Gainesville campus on Monday.

The demonstrators were charged with resisting arrest and trespassing, and one demonstrator was charged with assault for spitting on a police officer. The Tampa Bay Times reported.

ohio state university

A total of 36 people were arrested during an anti-Israel protest at Ohio State University last Thursday.

The university said at least 16 of those arrested were OSU students, and the rest had no connection to OSU.

University of Mary Washington

Twelve people, including nine students, were arrested Saturday at the University of Mary Washington in Virginia after protesters invited outsiders into their encampment, contrary to school policy, university President Troy Paino said in a statement. mentioned in.

Approximately 23 students were arrested during a protest at the UW camp on Tuesday morning. According to the Hartford Courant.

Police said they gave demonstrators four warnings to remove their tents before entering the campsite.
