White House Considers Inviting Gaza Palestinians as Refugees

Amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, the White House is reportedly considering whether to accept Palestinians from the Gaza Strip as refugees.

According to internal federal documents obtained by CBS NewsBiden administration officials and U.S. government agencies “discussed the practicality of various options for resettling Palestinians from Gaza who have immediate family members who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.”

The document shows that Palestinians are proposed to be admitted under the US refugee admissions program as a way to bring people into the country from war-torn Gaza. CBS News added:

According to the document, U.S. officials are also discussing expelling Palestinians from Gaza and treating them as refugees if they have American relatives. The plan would require coordination with Egypt, which has so far refused to accept large numbers of people from Gaza.

Potential refugees undergo a variety of security and medical examinations before gaining access to the United States and the many benefits that come with refugee resettlement in the country, including permanent residency, housing assistance, and a path to U.S. citizenship. Need to pass.

Although exact numbers are difficult to estimate, local public health officials say as many as 34,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza conflict and hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee their homes. Egypt and other neighboring countries in the region refuse to accept refugees. Israel launched its invasion of Gaza following a horrific terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7 last year, which killed more than 1,200 Israelis, most of them civilians, including women and children.

The White House Department of Homeland Security and the State Department have not commented on reports that the United States is considering importing Palestinian refugees.

“A proposal to resettle certain Palestinians as refugees would mark a shift in long-standing U.S. government policy and practice. Since its inception in 1980, the U.S. refugee program has resettled large numbers of Palestinians. They were never resettled,” CBS News said.

“Over the past decade, the United States has resettled more than 400,000 refugees fleeing violence and war around the world, compared to fewer than 600 Palestinians. In fiscal year 2023, the United States has resettled more than 400,000 refugees fleeing violence and war around the world. This represented 0.09% of the more than 60,000 refugees resettled in the 12-month period. Department of State statistics Show,” he added.
