A large brawl broke out at Norland High School in Miami Gardens on Monday, resulting in five shooting victims being hospitalized at nearby off-campus homes, Miami 10 reported.
Witnesses told media outlets that the fight appeared to involve two groups of girls.
“I know there were girls fighting. I don’t know what for. Some were beefing and some were swearing, so I think they were fighting,” said Noland student Jamali. told NBC6. “I know there were two fights, one outside the school and one in the back over there. There were a lot of people and it looked like there was a lot of jumping. There are two girls on each side, or two or three girls.”
NBC 6 reports that police said the boy’s parents went to the boy’s home on 197th Street NW to speak with him when another altercation occurred.
“There are five victims. Three adults and two children. The altercation started… [the school] Children get into fights. One of the parents came over to talk to the other parent, and another argument broke out. An altercation broke out and someone was fired,” said Diana Delgado, a spokeswoman for the Miami Gardens Police Department. told WSVN. After the teens got into a fight at Miami Norland High School, their parents resumed the fight at a nearby home. Reports said one of the adults fired a gun into the ground, causing it to ricochet. All five victims were shot in the legs and were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to multiple news outlets. The teens, ages 14 and 19, were taken to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, while the adults were taken elsewhere, WSVN reported.
Local 10 said police and ATF personnel placed the school on temporary lockdown as they searched the area, which was lifted on Tuesday. The cause of the fight remains unknown, the station reported.
No arrests have been made, NBC 6 reports.
Police have taken a person of interest into custody, but the investigation is ongoing: The identity of the shooter and the amount of firearms involved have not yet been released, WSVN reports.
