Americans ranked immigration as the most important issue facing the United States for the third consecutive month, according to a new poll released Tuesday.
According to a Gallup poll from April 1-22, 27% of Americans name immigration as the most important issue facing America.
Immigration has topped Gallup’s indefinite trends for the third month in a row. This is the longest consecutive immigration crisis in the past 24 years.
In December 2023, immigration was tied to the government as the most important issue for Americans. That was the same month that the number of migrant encounters at the southern border reached a record of 302,000.
Immigration surpassed government as the most important issue for Gallup respondents in February. That same month, a bipartisan border and foreign aid package sparked controversy in the Senate.
This is the first year since Gallup began updating its Most Important Issues question monthly in March 2001 that immigration has ranked as the most important issue to Americans for multiple months in a row. Immigration has been his top issue four times since 2000, either alone or alongside other issues. Different issues – at several points including 2014, 2018, and 2019.

In the latest poll, 48% of Republicans and 25% of independents cited immigration as the most important issue, compared to just 8% of Democrats.
The percentage of Republicans who cited immigration as a top priority has fallen from a record high of 57% in February.
