The Nebraska native was asked why fans react so violently to his comments about other fighters.

“Why do you think people are so hard on you in particular?” a reporter asked. Press conference.

“Part of that is due to the position I put myself in as an analyst. Fans are stupid…they’re stupid!” Smith explained. “you guys [the media] When you write an article, they don’t read the article, they just read the headline and figure out the rest in their head. If you actually read it, almost everything I say will make sense. I might do some crazy takes every once in a while, but it’s not that often,” Smith said in his defense.

The fighter then described the games he and his friends like to play. “What crazy shit can you say to see what the fans will say?”

“They’re just playing around with it, so that’s the way it is,” he said.

Smith has come under fire for comments he made praising light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, but noted that his skill set is “limited.”

Smith still called Pereira a “legitimate threat,” but added that “because of the matchup” the UFC has given Pereira, things are “really working in his favor.”

“He’s very, very, very dangerous in some ways, but mediocre in other ways,” Smith added.

Smith continued in the press conference that he feels fans have a problem with distinguishing between his comments as an analyst and his comments as an athlete. This especially happens when talking about opponents, but he admitted that it can be a bit of an exaggeration.

“When I’m talking about someone as an analyst, I don’t put myself into it. I can talk all I want about Alex Pereira. I don’t talk about what the relationship is going to be with me, I don’t put myself into it. I’m saying I’m better than him, but how I feel about myself has nothing to do with what I’m saying. ”

“As soon as I say that, because I’m still competing, [fans] There’s a problem with that. Lately, I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t really care about it. It doesn’t matter…the fighters know I’m telling the truth. No one comes up to me in the hallway and fights about it, they know I’m right! ” he declared.
