Americans are fleeing blue cities — and their suburbs

Many major American cities have continued to lose people for years, as high taxes and the failure or deliberate refusal to maintain law and order have created a downward spiral in living conditions. Now, suburbanites are also increasingly moving away from high-tax, chaotic urban areas.

“Metropolitan areas (populations of 1 million or more) lost 2 million net domestic migrants to other parts of the country in just three years (2021-2023),” the Commission for Prosperity and Liberation said. report.

Support for Trump was associated with population growth even in counties in states that experienced overall population declines, while the opposite occurred in Biden-leaning areas.

This exodus is not just a matter of Americans living in big cities moving to nearby suburbs. Suburban counties in the New York City metropolitan area lost more than 200,000 people between 2020 and 2023. Cities around Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Miami also experienced population declines during this period, the report said.

This is not surprising given that many suburban residents work within city limits or use businesses there, making them vulnerable to increased urban ills.

Millions of Americans are victims of increased crime. Retail stores, restaurants, bars, and other gathering places are closed or evacuated to less disruptive areas. Poor service and lack of safety for commuters have made public transport a reasonable option only for the desperate, such as those who must take public transport to get to work. Due to the unpredictable homeless population, large areas have become no-go zones. Illegal immigrants crowd local schools, making learning difficult for those already there. Poor service and destroyed roads impede commerce and safety. and so on.

A particularly compelling factor is that over the past decade many city governments have made a conscious choice not to arrest and prosecute large numbers of people who have committed crimes. Broken streetlights, tangled traffic, and potholed roads are an inconvenience. Crime is a serious threat to people’s lives and well-being.

Flight from deteriorating urban suburbs has important policy implications. The exodus is huge in areas run by Democrats. The defining characteristic of population growth and population decline in every U.S. county is whether its residents voted for Donald Trump in 2020, the Issues & Insights Editorial Board said.Note.

“The 10 counties that gained the most from net immigration last year had something in common: They were conservative counties that voted for Donald Trump in 2020,” the editors say. writing. “At the other end of the spectrum, all 10 counties with the largest net immigration declines also have something in common: They all voted for Biden in 2020.”

Although correlation is not causation, it stands to reason that local governments in counties that support Trump would be more conservative in their policies, while local governments in areas that voted for Biden would be more center-left. Issues and Insights confirms this on a national level: “From 2020 to 2023, counties that voted for Biden added a net 3.7 million people (3,670,516 to be exact) to counties that voted for Trump. I lost it.”

I&I notes that this equates to more than 1% of the U.S. population fleeing Democratic voting booths in three years.

Among the counties with the largest population declines, the association with support for Biden was fairly conclusive, at 100%. “11 counties with the largest population decline over the past three years” everyone voted for Biden” I&I Report (emphasis in original). “They lost a total of 2 million people.”

Support for Trump was associated with population growth even in counties in states that experienced overall population declines, while the opposite occurred in Biden-leaning areas.

One wonders how many millions more would have emigrated if economic, family, and other constraints had not prevented them from migrating.

The reason for the mass migration from Biden’s America to Trump’s America is clear. States that vote for Republican presidential candidates better government, lower tax rate, better job market, higher birth rate and Advantage over other states is expanding, The proportion of homeless people is much smaller, Decreasing homicide rates at the county level, Better protection against voter fraudsuperiority on various other measures.

The nation’s largest cities, all run by Democrats, are increasingly displacing people from their core areas, and now even their cities. From their suburbs. This is all a result of the catastrophic mismanagement and arrogance of the city government in a city dominated by the Democratic Party.

Across the country, Democratic-run subways are in a spiral of destructive governance. Bad policy produces negative effects, productive people retire, the government raises taxes, cuts services to those who remain, more people and businesses retire, and taxes shrink. More bases will further reduce government revenue, the government will cut services, more people will retire, and decline will accelerate. In these areas, the situation will only get worse unless the government reverses course and restores order.

Americans are increasingly voting with their feet, leaving Democratic-run places and issues for greener pastures. Meanwhile, many of these cities continue to impose policies that are harmful to them, compounding the misery of those left behind. As is often the case, the people are proving to be far wiser than the politicians.
