Ange Postecoglou also makes one change: Rodrigo Bentancur comes in for Richarlison, which probably means Son Heung-min will play up front.

Misery loves company, so it’s only right that Liverpool and Tottenham should meet today. After seven months of optimism, even euphoria at times, their seasons have turned to dust. Liverpool are out of the title race after dropping 10 points in the last five games; Spurs are out of the Champions League race after haemorrhaging 11 points in the same period. If they’re not careful they could miss out on the Europa League as well.

Liverpool will be keen to put on a show in Jurgen Klopp’s penultimate game at Anfield. Stricly speaking they need a win to stay in the title race, though reality has already bitten on that score. In the grand scheme, finishing third and winning a trophy – especially in such a feelgood manner – represents a good season for a team who were in transition even before Klopp announced his departure.

Spurs have had a fine season too: they’ve rediscovered their identity, found a long-term manager and doubled down on the tactical tweak du jour. Like Liverpool, they’ve been badly hit by injuries. And like Liverpool, they probably aren’t in the mood to celebrate the 2023-24 season just yet.

important events
15 minutes Spurs held the ball for over 30 seconds until Johnson fired a great ball into the face of goal. Clive Allen would devour it.
14 minutes Salah fired a shot that hit the near post, but was well offside.
13 minutes “Looking for another great win in regulation / boring draw / shocking loss at home for the Scousers today,” Jeremy Boyce said. “But who can blame them when the entire city, red and blue, is mourning one of each other’s greats? I’m talking about Bernard ‘Yosser Hughes’ Hill, one This is the man who created Scouse.” His accent and attitude are beautiful. I was always impressed by his fellow Sheikh “Anzu”. Be careful of shaking after the game. ”
I’m looking for clips of him and Graeme Souness, but I really need to start watching the games.
12 minutes At the other end, Johnson clipped a dangerous cross towards Kulusevski, which was well cleared by Robertson. This game is really open and a lot of fun.
9 minutes: Double chance for Liverpool! The game has come to life. Sarr lost the ball to Elliott, who played on Salah in a dangerous area. A shot from an angle was kicked away by Vicario, and Elliott’s follow was cleared on the line by Romero.
8 minutes: Salah hits the bar! A cross from the outside of his boot curved over Vicario and hit the face of the crossbar. Moments later, Salah looked set to convert Gakpo’s header, but Van de Ven stuck his foot out to clear it.
6 minutes The Spurs started well and continued to pass the ball around with their usual vigor and optimism. There are some early days, but it looks good.
4 minutes “Regarding Salah and Klopp, Alan Shearer wrote a very good column in The Athletic about the similarities between Salah’s benching last week and when he was sat by Sir Bobby Robson at Villa in 2004. “I wrote it,” says Joe Pearson. “I don’t normally introduce readers to other places, but this column has been very insightful.”
Please point far away. We’re all adults here, right? picture?
3 minutes Alexander-Arnold fouled Son on the left side, almost on the edge of the area. Polo’s free kick headed in and Bissouma put his shot on track.
2 minutes Spurs are at a club that has attracted widespread attention, with Polo winning an early corner after a long passing move. He takes it and Van Dijk heads it clear.
1 minute The Spurs kick off from left to right as you watch.

Jarel Quansah talks about Liverpool’s season
The locker room is full of winners and people who want to win – we won. [the League Cup] From this year onwards, I will be in a different place than everyone else.
Ange Postecoglou speaks to Sky Sports
This is the most challenging period of the season for us. There will probably be another challenge in 12 months and we need to be ready for it. The players understand that it is not easy to do what we are trying to do, but we have to work at it.
Today is a big test. But for us, it’s a great opportunity to go out and play some soccer.
[On the switch to three in midfield] I need my legs today. Look, the turnaround is short and we have some guys who are feeling a little bit of pain. I’m sure there’s some intensity and energy early in the match, but we wanted to make sure we got the balance right.
I try to take a step back from time to time and look at the bigger picture. This group of players performed very well this year. Sometimes I think I’m too hard on them, but there’s a reason for that.
“Why are Spurs so bad at recruiting players?” £40m-60m and not even worth half that? ” wonders Andrew Hurley.
I tried to make a tax joke, but given the awkward proper nouns and the need for capitalization, that would never work.
“Is Chelsea doing well?” Smells like Phil Gray. “Rob, aren’t you talking about the inconsistent Chelsea? They won one away game in 2024, but most recently lost to Arsenal and failed to beat Burnley and Sheffield United. The reason for their rise in the standings is that while Man United, Wolves, Brighton and Fulham are all in decline, Chelsea remain as unstable as ever.
Well, they’re in the top four on the form chart, but in some cultures that means they have good form.
Manager Jurgen Klopp speaks to Sky Sports
[Can you enjoy the last few games now the pressure is off?] Yes, I can. It’s even more difficult for male players. We just have to stand here and think, “What are we really playing for?” I know that I need a reason or motivation to give my all. we’ve been trying that. we had a good week. We trained intensively, knew what to do and prepared our players.
Tottenham are a tricky opponent with a special way of playing. You can’t just go up against it and say, “Let’s take a look.” Otherwise, they will penetrate you and cause big problems.
I feel very good. This is our second to last home game so I’m looking forward to it.
[On Mo Salah’s return] He had a really good week of training. There was no question at all that he would start today because that’s what we all want and that’s what he wants too.
Full time: Brighton 1-0 Aston Villa
If the MBM preamble expires before the match begins, it is always a win. Spurs could be back in Champions League contention after Aston Villa lost 1-0 to Brighton. This means Spurs are seven points behind Villa with two games in hand. One of those games is against Manchester City, so they probably need to win today to have a realistic chance of finishing fourth.

Premier league latest work
Chelsea, who are in good form, will defeat West Ham in a match at 2pm. The match between Brighton and Aston Villa was scoreless. But it may not last long. A penalty has just been given. Click click click click.
Spurs won 2-1 in their return game in September.but that match will always be remembered for the lack of a goal.
Team news: Salah starts, Richarlison withdraws
Mo Salah replaces Ryan Gravenbirch, the only change from Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with West Ham. That means Harvey Elliott will return to midfield.
Ange Postecoglou has also made changes. Richarlison will be replaced by Rodrygo Bentancur, with Son Heung-min likely to play up front.

preamble
Misery loves his mates, so it’s no surprise that Liverpool and Tottenham play today. After seven months of optimism and even euphoria, their season has turned to ashes. Liverpool have dropped 10 points from their last five games and are out of the title race. Spurs bled 11 points in the same period and missed out on qualifying for the Champions League. If we are not careful, we could miss out on the Europa League.
Liverpool will be hoping to put on a show in Jurgen Klopp’s penultimate game at Anfield. Technically, they need a win to stay in title contention, but reality is already affecting that score. Broadly speaking, finishing in 3rd place and winning the trophy, especially winning it in such a comfortable manner, was a good season for a team that was in a transition period even before Klopp announced his departure. It means something.
Spurs also had a great season. They rediscovered their identity, found a long-term manager and focused on fine-tuning their tactics. Like Liverpool, they too have been hit by injuries. And, like Liverpool, they won’t be in the mood to celebrate the 2023-24 season just yet.
