The driver crashed his speeding car into the outer gates of the White House on Saturday and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities did not characterize the accident as a deliberate or politically motivated act, but rather described it as a “simple… traffic accident.”

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement published in X that “there was no threat or public safety impact” as a result of Saturday’s incident.

The crash occurred just before 10:30 p.m., and “security protocols were in place,” according to the President and the Treasury Department’s Security Service, which did not specify.

“Security procedures were implemented as officers removed the vehicle and attempted to render aid to the driver, who was found deceased,” the Secret Service said.

The accident appears to have occurred at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and the southeast corner of the complex, near the Ellipse, South Lawn and Treasury Department, and about 300 feet from the White House.
