5 US sailing team members go flying overboard as boat capsizes

Last Friday, during the third fleet race of the Apex Group Bermuda Sail Grand Prix practice day, a wild scene unfolded as a member of Team USA jumped after his boat capsized.

When the boat reached mark 1, the American boat’s upper wing flipped over and it suddenly rolled over.

Five of the six crew members of the American team were sent overboard, but no one was seriously injured.

Data from the US F50 boat revealed that there was a “user error” that caused the boat to capsize. Wing trimmer Victor Diaz de Leon pressed a button that accidentally flipped the wing.

Díaz de Leon was trying to flatten the wing, but just hit the wrong button. SailGP’s data team found that the button was pressed a total of seven times.

According to SailGP.com, Diaz de Leon said, “While operating the wing, I selected the wrong function on the control panel and the boat flipped over. It was very scary, but the team I’m thankful that all my mates are safe.”

Although there were no serious injuries to the team, the F50 was severely damaged in the capsize and the United States was unable to compete in Bermuda.

The team was unable to repair the boat in time for the official race.

The American team, led by Taylor Canfield, is currently ranked 7th out of 10 teams in this season’s SailGP Season 4.
