Doug Burgum says a Donald Trump conviction would be a ‘travesty of justice’

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum (R) said it would be a “travesty of justice” if former President Trump was convicted in the New York hush money trial.

“If he becomes a convicted felon in this case, that would be a travesty of justice, because, as I said, when there was a business filing error, Because it’s for what it was again, and it’s not illegal to do that.”Paying people for non-disclosure agreements – it happens all the time. I’m sure this network and others have done it. So it’s not illegal,” Burgum told co-host Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

President Trump has been locked up in a Manhattan courtroom for weeks as his New York hush-money case trial continues. President Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection with reimbursing payments he made to adult film stars to keep quiet about his alleged affair with former fixer Michael Cohen.

President Trump has denied all wrongdoing and has frequently branded the incident as politically motivated.

Burkum continued to defend the former president on Sunday, saying that taking the case to trial now was “intended to get a result before the election.” Speculation is swirling over whether Burgum, who has supported the former president, will be included on President Trump’s running mate list.

“That’s why everyone sees this as politically motivated and, as I said, the filing errors have an impact on the American people who are trying to put food on the table and gas in their cars. It doesn’t affect them,” Burgum said.

“And…this is why the outcome of this trial is not going to change many people’s minds. It may help President Trump in some ways.”

Tapper said there was “no evidence” that President Biden had anything to do with the hush-money scandal in New York.
