Bill Belichick jokingly set the record straight as to who was responsible for the Patriots’ dynasty.
The former New England head coach made a surprise appearance on Netflix’s “The Roast of Tom Brady” on Sunday, when Hollywood star Will Ferrell brought him out to play Ron Burgundy.
Belichick spent more than 10 minutes on stage and ended his set by offering his take on the debate over who is responsible for the Patriots’ seven Super Bowl championships.
“To all of you who are wondering who is responsible for the Patriots’ success during Tom and I’s time there,” Belichick said. “Was it Brady? Was it me? Was it Brady? Was it me? The truth is, we were both at fault.”
That wasn’t the only time Belichick got excited at Brady’s expense.
Previously, the former NFL coach addressed the plight of English soccer club Birmingham City, of which Brady is part-owner and has been relegated to the third tier of the English soccer pyramid.
“They suck,” Belichick said of them. “It’s not that easy to run a team, is it, Tom?”
Belichick then addressed the occasional butt of heads with Brady while taking a jab at Alex Guerrero, the trainer behind Brady’s TB12 method.
“In a way that was true, but it really wasn’t. Tom was in a much higher position than Alex Guerrero, so it was difficult to headbutt him,” he said.
Belichick also didn’t shy away from poking fun at negative portrayals of himself in Apple TV+’s 10-part documentary series “The Dynasty: New England Patriots.”
“I’m honored to be joining you for the roast of Tom Brady tonight on Netflix. Not to be confused with the 10-step roast of Bill Belichick that appeared during the Apple TV documentary,” Belichick said.
He even had fun at the expense of tight end Rob Gronkowski for a TV job.
“Mr. Gronk, I was watching Fox NFL on Sunday, and please, please stop working,” Belichick said. “Please do another job. Do someone else’s job.”
Aside from Brady, Belichick was a frequent target of the roster Sunday night, with Ferrell firing just before bringing Belichick on stage.

At one point, Ferrell said it’s clear Brady is the reason for the dynasty.
“Think back to those days when people thought it was you, but it wasn’t really. It was Tom,” Ferrell joked.
