Will Mets be winners? Look at Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, steals

Even with nearly a quarter of the season’s worth of additional information, it feels like we have no idea who the Mets will be in 2024.

I came out of spring training believing they could win 78 or 88 games, but over five weeks into the season, nothing has really changed. You can convince me that they are a strong wildcard candidate, and you can convince me that they should be considered to be July sellers for the second year in a row.

For example, Francisco Lindor has a batting average of .279, an OPS of .962, 4 home runs, and 3 stolen bases in the 11 games leading up to Sunday, putting him in 4th place on the Mets in Baseball-Reference wins over his replacements. What do you think about the fact that He made it on three tries, but the five players around him are Jose Butt, Reid Garrett, Brett Batty, Luis Severino, and Tyron Taylor?

No one wrote that on their bingo cards at the beginning of the season, so is this a positive sign that David Stearns’ obsession with improving depth has helped? Or is it a sign of a downturn in the stars? Is it much more important? Lindor was upset. However, while Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil are anchoring the offense, Brandon Nimmo is still not doing enough.
