Mark Zuckerberg’s $300 Million Superyacht Sparks Controversy Amidst Climate Activism

Meta founder and billionaire Mark Zuckerberg made headlines with his recent acquisition of a $300 million superyacht named Launchpad. Mr Zuckerberg’s luxury ship, which is longer than a football field, has drawn criticism based on his climate change activism.

Hindustan Times report Mark Zuckerberg, with an estimated net worth of $180 billion, joins the ranks of tech billionaires including Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison, and Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, and owns a luxury supermarket. He said he bought a yacht. This 118-meter-long vessel was designed by Sweden-based Espen Øin International and boasts a sleek, multi-layered exterior with a solid steel hull and aluminum superstructure.

Making her transatlantic debut in March 2024, the yacht has a gross tonnage of 5,000 tons and can cruise at speeds of up to 24 knots, offering her owners a spectacular cruising experience. Currently ranked 45th among the world’s largest yachts, she also has a helipad for convenient air travel.

But the internet isn’t just in awe of the yacht’s stunning visuals and impressive features. Critics say Zuckerberg, a vocal advocate of fighting climate change, owns a private jet that reportedly consumed more than $158,000 in fuel in less than two months, and a superyacht that he currently owns. However, superyachting is considered one of the most polluting activities a person can engage in.

For example, Roman Abramovich’s yacht is said to emit more than 22,000 tons of carbon dioxide a year, more than some small countries, while Jeff Bezos’ $500 million The yacht “Col” emits 7,000 tons per year.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) tweeted: “Look, this is Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht. However, the guy who flies a private jet with Bill Gates has a hand in the plan. No doubt, it’s all our fault.”

“Mark Zuckerberg’s megayacht. But they tell us that driving gas-powered cars is ruining the planet…” This debate is about whether Zuckerberg’s yacht is “a luxury paradise or climate change.” Some even question whether it is a hideout for hypocrites.
