Army Secretary Questions Senator’s Comments on Classified Briefings
Recently, U.S. Department of the Army Secretary Pete Hegseth indicated that Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) might be facing serious repercussions for his remarks regarding classified Pentagon briefings.
Hegseth made his statements through social media on Sunday, referencing an article by Margaret Brennan from Face the Nation which highlighted Kelly’s views on the U.S. weapons stockpile.
“It’s shocking how deep we have gone into these magazines,” Kelly commented after reviewing a classified Pentagon report about the Iran conflict’s effects on U.S. military supplies. He expressed concern over the depletion of self-defense interceptor munitions, including Tomahawks, ATACMS, SM-3, THAAD, and Patriot systems. Kelly warned that it may take years to recover these stockpiles, which could affect potential conflicts involving the U.S. and China, as reported by Brennan.
In turn, Hegseth criticized the former Navy captain, stating that authorities were looking into the matter. He asserted, “Captain Mark Kelly strikes again. Now he’s on TV raving (falsely and stupidly) about the *classified* Pentagon briefing he received. Has he broken his vow yet again? Lawyers will consider it.”
According to sources, the Department of the Army initiated an investigation into Kelly last November following serious allegations of misconduct made by former President Donald Trump, which included claims of incitement.
This came after Kelly, along with other Democrats, urged military members in a video to “reject illegal orders” from the administration. In that video, he stated, “Our laws are clear. We can refuse illegal orders.”
Kelly later labeled the DOW’s probe into the video as “almost comical.”
Reports indicated that in January, Hegseth announced actions against Kelly due to comments he made later in 2025 that the Army described as “inflammatory” and which allegedly encouraged military personnel to disobey legal orders. Hegseth criticized a video released by Kelly and five other congress members for undermining military discipline, highlighting Kelly’s ongoing military benefits and responsibilities.
In response to Hegseth’s remarks regarding the classified meeting, Kelly pointed out on social media that their discussion a week ago mentioned it would take “years” to replenish some of the stockpile.
He emphasized that this was an unclassified quote and remarked on the ongoing costs of the war, questioning why neither Hegseth nor the President had clarified the objectives to the American public.
Interestingly, Hegseth had previously declared a “historic and overwhelming victory” in Iran, asserting that Trump had orchestrated this achievement. He maintained that the President consistently claimed there was no Iranian nuclear weapon, suggesting that the U.S. controls the situation rather than the other way around.
