JJ Watt Says He’d Play Again if Texans ‘Absolutely Needed It’

As J.J. Watt turns 35, he told Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans this year will be the last time he offers to return to the team.

And Lyons said he’s open to that possibility.

Watt made the revelation to reporters Saturday at a softball benefit event in Sugar Land, Texas, insisting he would return to the Texans if Lyons “absolutely has to.” fox news report.

“I told DeMeco last year, ‘Don’t call me unless you absolutely have to. But if you do, I’ll be right there.'” I know I shouldn’t make the phone calls,” said the player and philanthropist.

“This is the last year I’m going to tell him this because I’m not going to keep training like I used to, but if he really needs it I’ll be there for him. “I don’t expect that to happen, but they have a very good staff,” he added.

Lyons replied: “I love hearing J.J. say he’s ready.” According to sports radio host Sean Pendergast, I have his number ready in case I need him. I did it.

“He looks good, he’s in good shape and he’s ready to roll. So I might have to make a decision. I’m happy to be open to him,” Lyons added.

Watt signed another contract last year, but not to become a player. Instead, he signed a deal with CBS to become an NFL studio analyst.

The Houston Texans selected Watt with the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He played 12 NFL seasons, his first 10 with Houston and the last two with the Arizona Cardinals. Injuries reduced Watt’s productivity in the second half of his career. However, he set his all-time high numbers early in his career. Watt had 20.5 sacks in 2012 and 2014 and 17.5 sacks in 2015.

He finished his career with 114.5 sacks, ranking him 24th all-time, according to CBS Sports.
