Utah NHL Franchise Has Figured Out Their New Name … Well, For Now

We have a name! I agree.

The NHL heads to Utah for games to begin next season. The now-defunct Arizona Coyotes will be sold to new owners Ryan Smith and Ashley Smith, who also play for the NBA’s Utah Jazz, and will move to Salt Lake City.

Yes, this deal was finalized in April, so everyone knows about it. But at the time, we didn’t know what this franchise would be called.

But guys, we now have the answer. At least for one season. The name is boring, but unique. (Related: Stupid! ESPN makes one of the biggest mistakes of all time)

As far as nicknames go, the franchise won’t have it in the 2024-25 campaign. Rather, they will simply call it “Utah.” Their jerseys simply say “Utah” and official communications will be exactly the same. In the past, we’ve seen the current Washington Commanders call themselves the Washington Football Team when rebranding from the Redskins, but Utah is taking a different approach.

When it comes to nicknames, the team has a plan – 20 to be exact. The team has announced a total of 20 potential team names for fans to vote on, and the brand will become the franchise’s identity starting with the 2025-26 season.
