A State Department report on Israel’s use of American weapons sought to please both pro-Israel and anti-Israel voices and generated a number of contradictory headlines.
“Biden administration says Israel has not violated U.S. arms regulations.” NBC. “The United States claims that the use of American weapons by Israel may have violated international law, but the evidence is incomplete.” AP. “The Biden administration acknowledged the possibility of Israeli weapons misuse in a report to Congress.” USA Today.
Very few are linked to actual documentso that readers can take a look at it and decide for themselves.
The reason for the confusion is obvious. Although the State Department could not find any actual information, evidence While it claims that Israel used U.S.-made weapons in a manner that violates international humanitarian law and international human rights law, it does not believe that Israel did so “given Israel’s heavy dependence on U.S.-made weapons.” He argued that it was reasonable.
So while anti-Israel activists can claim that the State Department has determined that it is “reasonable” to accuse Israel of violating international law, Israel’s defenders can argue that the State Department has determined that it is “reasonable” to charge Israel with violations of international law. It can be pointed out that no evidence has been found.
The report already documents Hamas’ use of civilians as human shields, Israel’s efforts to avoid harm to civilians, and its investigative and judicial procedures to address allegations of wrongdoing. Adds little to what is already known.
Therefore, discrepancies in the report may reflect competing agendas within and outside the State Department rather than facts. There is material available for Israel’s critics, and there is also material for Israel’s supporters to cite in its defense.
