Six – count them – SIX 3pm BST kick-offs in the Premier League today. A rare feast of Saturday afternoon football in the top flight. Most of the interest will be at the bottom end of the table, with Burnley and Luton both needing results to take their relegation battles to the final day of the season.

The Clarets must win at Spurs and for Luton for it’s the same at West Ham, but both need Nottingham Forest to succumb to Chelsea in Saturday’s late game. Mathematically, Rob Edwards’ men cannot be relegated today, but their double-digit goal difference to Forest would require something highly questionable to occur on the final day if Nuno Espirito Santo’s side get all three points against the Blues.

Spurs still have an outside chance of Champions League football next season but only if they win and Aston Villa fail to get more than two points from their remaining fixtures. Newcastle, who take on a flatlining Brighton at St James’ Park, will be hoping for Tottenham to slip up as Europa League remains a possibility if Eddie Howe’s side can continue their strong recent form.

The remaining matches look distinctly mid-table with Wolves taking on a resurgent Crystal Palace, Bournemouth welcoming Brentford to the Vitality and Everton facing already-relegated Sheffield United – a fixture that even diehards will be struggling to get up for.

In Scotland, after today’s early kick-off for the Old Firm, Ross County, who host Motherwell, and St Johnstone, who visit relegated Livingstone, are scrapping it out to avoid the relegation playoff. St Mirren scan still earn a Europa League playoff spot but need a positive result at home against Kilmarnock, the team one place above them, to keep that dream alive.

Some thoughts on the starting lineup Oliver Skip is supposed to play left back for the Spurs, with James Maddison back in the starting lineup. Emerson Royal and Rodrygo Bentancur will be absent, but the bench looks pretty thin without Timo Werner and Richarlison.

Newcastle’s Joelinton returned to the bench but was replaced by Elliott Anderson, with Callum Wilson absent and Eddie Howe telling reporters the England striker was “not 100 per cent”. Kieran Trippier also returns, joining Miguel Almiron and Nick Pope, who have been absent recently, in the squad. Julio Enciso started for Brighton after it was revealed on Friday that top scorer Joao Pedro had taken a hit to his ankle.

David Moyes’ farewell to the London Stadium saw James Ward-Prowse return to West Ham’s side and Edson Alvarez dropped to the bench after picking up a knock last weekend.

preamble

Today’s Premier League kicks off at sixes – and counting – 3pm BST. A rare feast of top-flight football on a Saturday afternoon. Most of the attention is focused on the bottom of the table, with Burnley and Luton both needing a result to advance the relegation battle into the final day of the season.

The Clarets have to win against Spurs and, as they did against West Ham, they also have to win against Luton, both of which require Nottingham Forest to succumb to Chelsea in Saturday’s late games. Mathematically, Rob Edwards’ side cannot be relegated today, but given their double-digit goal difference with Forest, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side took all three points against the Blues. If so, something very suspicious must happen on the last day.

Spurs still have a chance to qualify for next season’s Champions League, but only if they win and Aston Villa fail to pick up more than two points from their remaining games. Newcastle will be hoping Tottenham can advance as they face a level-headed Brighton side at St James’ Park, with a Europa League place still in the cards if Eddie Howe’s side can maintain their recent form.

The remaining fixtures will be decidedly mid-table fixtures, with Wolves taking on a resurgent Crystal Palace, Bournemouth hosting vitality Brentford and Everton taking on already relegated Sheffield United.

In Scotland, after today’s early Old Firm kick-off, Ross County, who host Motherwell, and St Johnstone, who visit relegated Livingston, have had their games called off to avoid a relegation play-off. St Mirren Scans still have a place in the Europa League play-offs, but they need to do well at home against Kilmarnock, one team above them, to keep that dream alive.

We will also be tracking the second leg of the Scottish Championship and League One play-offs this afternoon.
