Prosecutors in Alabama have decided to seek the death penalty for Loretta Carr, 44, who is accused of pushing her mother to death over a cliff.
The DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office filed a notice in court last week informing a judge of its intention to pursue the death penalty if Carr is convicted of murder. Reported by WAFF.
Carr was charged with the murder of his mother, Mary Elizabeth Isbell, 37, and is being held without bail.
Authorities allege Carr had previously kidnapped Isbell and forced her off a cliff into Fort Payne’s Little River Canyon.
It is unclear how the women met.
Carr’s daughter, Jessie Eden Kelly, is also charged with secret murder for her alleged role in Isbell’s death.
Isbell was reported missing to the Hartselle Police Department and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office in late 2021.
Her body was discovered by a search team in Little River Canyon National Park on June 28, 2023.
Either Carr or Kelly led police to the location of Isbell’s body.
Carr was arrested on June 25, 2023, and has pleaded not guilty, according to online court records.
Kelly was extradited to Alabama. At the time of her arrest, she was being held in Pennsylvania for reasons unknown.
