Border Patrol mobile app for migrants seeking entry into US controversial on both sides of immigration debate

The government’s mobile app for migrants seeking asylum at the southern border has become controversial on both sides of the immigration debate.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) says on its website that the CBP One app, which allows people to book appointments at points of entry into the U.S., will help “immigrate migrants while eliminating unscrupulous smugglers who profit by endangering vulnerable migrants. “This has improved CBP’s ability to more efficiently and orderly process . ”

However, Amnesty International said in a report published this week that requiring asylum seekers to use the app was a “clear violation of international human rights and refugee law”.

Human rights groups say the app creates “additional complexities and obstacles to an already difficult process”.

Amnesty International’s Americas director, Anna Pikar, said in a statement: “The use of the CBP One application makes access to entry and asylum conditional on making an advance appointment and appearing at a port of entry. Although technological, innovations could provide safer transport and more orderly border procedures. [programs] It cannot condition or limit how international protection can be sought in the United States, as CBP does. ”

The Biden administration has begun using the CBP One app to help asylum seekers needed at the border amid a surge in illegal immigration and as it prepares to repeal Title 42 a year ago, according to the Los Angeles Times. Its use was expanded to help people plan their schedules.

The app was actually conceived near the end of the Trump administration as a way to speed up border crossings for people with a legal right to enter the country.

But the app is equally unpopular with conservatives who say it encourages immigrants to apply for asylum.

Last fall, the House Homeland Security Committee wrote about the app’s “shocking abuse” and said that between January and September of last year, 95.8% of all “undocumented aliens who made reservations through the app” ended up “not appearing in court.” He said he had received a notice. ” and let him enter the country.

”[Homeland Security] secretary [Alejandro] “Mr. Mayorkas thoroughly abused the CBP One app in his push for open borders,” Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-Tenn.) said in a statement. “These numbers demonstrate that Mr. Mayorkas’ activities “This is proving to be a smokescreen to release a large number of individuals out of the country.” Otherwise, this country would have had zero right to apply for entry.

“At a time when global tensions are high and our enemies are becoming bolder, it is irresponsible to release tens of thousands of people into our communities, especially when they have not been adequately vetted. Despite being threatened with subpoenas from Congress to get answers, we will continue to fight for the truth.”

The government claims the app will allow border officials to focus on other border security issues and stop illegal border crossings.

“Over the past decade, there have been numerous instances where migrants show up at ports of entry without any prior information and quickly overwhelm our teams,” said Diane Sabatino, CBP Acting Deputy Director of Field Operations. He spoke at the monthly assembly. , according to the Los Angeles Times.

CBP and the White House did not immediately respond to FOX News Digital’s requests for comment.
