Nottingham attacker Valdo Kalokane, who stabbed three people to death in the city last year, will not be sent to prison after the Court of Appeal rejected his application to extend his sentence with an indefinite hospitalization order.
Calocane, 32, was sentenced in January after pleading guilty to three counts of manslaughter and three counts of attempted murder, citing incapacity due to paranoid schizophrenia.
The suspects involved in a series of violent incidents in the East Midlands in June last year include university students Grace O’Malley Kumar and Barnaby Webber, both 19, and school manager Ian Coates. (65 years old) and ran over three others.
The victim’s family said “justice was not served” by the ruling and are seeking a hybrid order that would see Mr Karokane sent to prison if he is deemed fit enough to be discharged from hospital.
His sentence was deemed unduly light by the Attorney General and referred to the Court of Appeal, where his lawyers argued he should be given a life sentence, including a term of imprisonment upon discharge.
Deanna Heer KC, acting for the Attorney General’s Office, said: “The level of seriousness of the offense was unusual and this case required the imposition of a sentence with a criminal element.”
