Brzezinski Critiques Senator Murphy Over Controversial Candidate Comments
On Monday, MS NOW host Mika Brzezinski expressed strong criticism of Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, accusing him of gaslighting after he avoided directly addressing remarks made by New York Congressional candidate Daria Lisa Avila Chevalier.
During an appearance on “Meet the Press,” Murphy told guest host Ryan Nobles that he wasn’t “very knowledgeable” about the race but mentioned he aimed to promote a broader dialogue within the Democratic Party. This came in light of a campaign ad that showcased Avila Chevalier’s history of provocative social media posts, which have included harsh criticism of former President Joe Biden, even labeling him a “rapist.”
Brzezinski pointed out the significance of this situation for candidates across the political spectrum. “This is an interesting question for both sides since many candidates have past tweets that could be seen as problematic,” she noted. “Voters need to figure out what’s acceptable and what isn’t.” She added, “Some statements are clearly deal-breakers. It’s frustrating to see people act surprised by certain things, especially given the context of the past political environment.”
She further stated, “This feels like the most gaslighting I’ve experienced in this political cycle. It’s impossible to ignore what’s out there.”
Brzezinski also called out Murphy and other Democrats for similar behavior, despite her respect for Murphy. “We appreciate Chris Murphy; we think he’s doing important work. But let’s stop trying to gaslight people,” she urged.
Her co-host, Joe Scarborough, echoed her sentiments on social media, criticizing Murphy’s unwillingness to confront Avila Chevalier’s remarks. Scarborough suggested Democrats should not hesitate to denounce such comments, referring to them as “crazy,” especially when they’re from their own party. “Being better than Republicans is key for winning over voters,” he argued.
Avila Chevalier, who is 32, has been a prominent community organizer known for leading anti-Israel protests while at Columbia University. Her past statements, now removed, included a strong denunciation of the U.S., the Democratic Party, police forces, and even a call for nationalization of vast parts of the private sector. In a 2021 repost, she advocated for the abolition of borders, prisons, and police, asserting that these changes were “possible, necessary, and the only moral step forward.”
“This country is an utter disgrace,” she expressed in one post. Additionally, she made a controversial comment about not having napkins and using an American flag instead, which has drawn scrutiny.
