At least eight people were killed and 40 hospitalized after a bus carrying farm workers crashed in Florida Tuesday morning, authorities said.
Approximately 53 workers were injured when a 2010 International Bus “slided” into a 2001 Ford Ranger pickup truck on West State Route 40 in Marion County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). was on board.
It was not immediately clear what caused the two vehicles to collide.
After the collision, the bus veered off the road, crashed through a fence and overturned.

Of the approximately 40 other people hospitalized, eight suffered serious injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was also hospitalized with serious injuries, officials said.
Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods confirmed at a news conference that the bus was carrying migrant workers, a common occurrence in the farming county.

Officials said the bus was transporting employees to Cannon Farm in Dunnellon when the fatal crash occurred.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office announced that West Highway 40 was closed due to a “serious accident involving a fatality” and advised motorists to take alternative routes.
