Comedian Bill Maher on Bill Maher’s Club Random Podcast Said Cancel culture is over. Mr. Maher disagreed.
The conversation centered around comedian Louis CK, who was blacklisted in 2017 after being accused of masturbating in front of a female comic. CK eventually admitted it, and his professional life was immediately expunged. A movie with just a few days left until its release has lost its distributor. Additionally, CK lost his representation rights, numerous television shows, and concert appearances.
Today, seven years later, CK is still forced to work outside of a Hollywood system that doesn’t want him to be a part of it. He can only produce and distribute his works online.
“I mean, don’t get me started.” [Louis C.K.]. Isn’t it time for everyone to say this? ‘Okay, it wasn’t cool, but it’s been long enough, so welcome back.’ Said. “Enough! I mean, for Christ’s sake, it’s not the end of the world. People have done worse and gotten less. There’s no rhyme or reason to #MeToo type punishments. ”
“They took $50 million. I think they punished him,” Barr responded. The $50 million is what CK lost after all of his contracts expired in 2017.
Barr continued:[#MeToo] We started with something everyone could agree on, but things quickly spiraled out of control. Barr explained, “Cancel culture has gotten to the point where it’s like, ‘We don’t like some of the buzz in your stand-up act,’ right?” That’s when things started to go wrong. ”
“Cancel culture is over. Nobody cares anymore.”
Mr. Maher disagreed. “That’s not true. Either of us could be canceled within the next two minutes.”
This is all intentional. #MeToo intentionally offers no rhyme or reason as a way to alarm, stress, and keep people silent. Mike Tyson is a convicted rapist who is now treated like Hollywood’s beloved mascot. I’m not advocating that Tyson be blacklisted. he fulfilled his mission. he paid his dues. But why is Tyson allowed back into the fold and Louis CK isn’t? The answer is simple. Because without rules, everyone will continue to feel fear.
Let me just say this…
One of the reasons CK is on the blacklist is that what he did was pretty awful and people now look at him differently. As evil as rape is, Tyson has avoided being defined by his crime. That’s what saved him. His rape conviction is part of his identity, but so are his boxing achievements and how he effectively transformed his personality after prison, becoming kind-hearted and reserved.
Louis CK has not been able to overcome being defined by his pathological behavior. Maher is right that people (like Tyson) have done far worse, but fair or not, that behavior is now CK’s very identity, and until that changes, he will remain in the mainstream. It would be difficult to go back.
Image is everything. Image isn’t reality, but that’s all there is to it, and until Louis C.K. can change his appearance, that destroyed and unpleasant image will more than anything else hinder his comeback. but…
Hollywood helped change Mike Tyson’s image (of hangover), an opportunity not yet given to CK
