New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) has floated the idea of hiring newly arrived immigrants as lifeguards at the city’s public pools and celebrating them as “excellent swimmers.”
On Tuesday, Mr. Adams complained at a news conference that hundreds of thousands of immigrants who arrived in New York City in the past few years remain ineligible to work.
Instead, Adams said he hopes migrants will be offered lifeguard jobs at the city’s public pools and beaches because they are “good swimmers.”
“Imagine for a moment if we had a plan for immigrants and asylum seekers that said, “We would be able to respond quickly to jobs that are in high demand.” [work permits]Adams said:
How do we have so many people in our cities and countryside who are good swimmers but need lifeguards? And the only obstacle is not giving them the right to work? To become a lifeguard. That doesn’t make sense. However, if there was a plan that said, “There is a shortage of food service employees, we will immediately hire people who meet the requirements.” [Emphasis added]
…
We’re waiting for all the qualified people with the skills needed for the job, but we can’t allow them to work. Because bureaucracy gets in the way. That doesn’t make sense. [Emphasis added]
Adams has long supported using the southern border as simply a crossing point where immigrants can enter the United States with work permits to get jobs.
Last October, while traveling in Latin America, Mr. Adams suggested that immigrants around the world were entitled to a “right to work” in the United States, regardless of the impact mass immigration had on Americans’ job prospects and wages. .
“If you look at Colombia, they really show how to absorb individuals into their society. One of the most important ways to do that is to put people to work.” said Mr. Adams. “There is nothing more humane or more American than the right to work, and we believe it is a right that should be expanded.”
