Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser is facing the ire of critics for attending the Masters golf tournament in a private jet last week as violent crime continues to plague the city.
Bowser, who is currently facing plummeting approval ratings, traveled more than 500 miles to Augusta, Georgia, with senior advisers on the jet of real estate executive and mayoral campaign donor Jody McLean. Tournament on April 13th.
Bowser initially faced criticism for using taxpayers’ 10 cents to travel to the Masters, but after news broke he took a private jet, although the cost was covered by MacLean. Critics took to social media to express their displeasure.

Mr. Bowser’s plane trip with Mr. MacLean has drawn the attention of watchdog groups concerned about potential conflicts of interest because his company does business with the city, but company spokeswoman Edens said the trip He said he was aware that he would be compensated for the cost, The Washington Post reported. “I’ve always looked at polls for what they are: a snapshot in time, a report card,” Bowser said Monday at the launch of the Public Safety Hub, as reported by Washington’s local NBC affiliate. “This is what I say to my team every day: When crime improves, people will feel better about crime,” she added.

Washington, D.C. crime data shows the number of homicides in the city is down compared to the same time last year, but remains high, with 56 people killed since the beginning of 2024.
