The United States Capitol Police (USCP) announced that it is launching an investigation after a small bag of cocaine was discovered inside its headquarters.
Police found an “approximately 1″ x 1″ Ziploc bag containing a small amount of a white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine at the scene.”
The discovery was made on a floor inside the Capitol Police headquarters, an area used as a storage area for furniture and supplies that are “frequently bought and sold” by staff and various contractors. USCP said in a release:.
The bag was discovered by a police officer just before 1pm on Wednesday and immediately reported to a supervisor.
USCP headquarters is not located at the Capitol, but several blocks away at D and Second Streets.
The USCP announced that it has opened an investigation into the incident and will conduct further testing, including DNA testing of the bag.
The Hill reached out to USCP for additional comment, and the release said it would provide more information as it becomes available.
Last July, the Secret Service acknowledged finding cocaine in the White House. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at the time that the cocaine was found in a high-traffic area, days before a tour of the West Wing.
President Biden was not in the White House when it was discovered. The bag was found near the area where visitors are asked to leave their cellphones on part of the West Building tour.
